Introduction
The Action Mersey Estuary Partnership was set up to focus on the tidal area of the River Mersey as it flows through Warrington and Halton, past Vale Royal and Ellesmere Port, passing between Wirral and Liverpool to the mouth of the river and into Liverpool Bay.
It brings together community organisations and groups, businesses, local authorities and statutory agencies to look at the changes taking place along the banks of the estuary and implement the Mersey Estuary Management Plan.
The Mersey Estuary is home to heavy industry and major ports, as well as residential areas, green spaces and internationally important environmental and cultural areas. These include the Mersey Estuary Ramsar/SPA site, recognised and protected for its valuable bird life, and the Unesco World Heritage Site on the Liverpool Waterfront. Action Mersey Estuary works in partnership with the Mersey Waterfront Regional Park to transform the Mersey Waterfront and all its assets to create a unique sense of place that attracts people to live, work, visit and invest in Merseyside.
Following massive investment (approx. £1billion has been invested by partners including Unitied Utilities and the Environment Agency) the River Mersey is now cleaner that it has been for 100 years. Fish, including spawning salmon, have returned to a river that what was once famed for its fishing.
