Introduction
Action Upper Weaver was established in 1999 and focuses on the upper catchment of the River Weaver and the extensive canal network in south Cheshire. It brings together all members of the community to improve the River Weaver and its tributaries, from its source in the Peckforton Hills to the southern end of Winsford Flashes.
For most of its course the Weaver is a predominately rural river. In the area covered by Action Upper Weaver it runs mainly through agricultural farmland with little public access to the river itself. Recently, however, focus has been given to increasing the access to the river at Nantwich and to designating three riverside local nature reserves on the river and two of its tributaries.
The two largest towns in the upper Weaver catchment are the market town of Nantwich and the railway town of Crewe. The river runs through the centre of Nantwich while three of its tributaries pass through Crewe.
