Introduction
Action Bollin forms part of the Bollin Valley Partnership, which started in 1972 as a pioneering three-year experiment to resolve problems and conflicts on south Manchester’s urban fringe. It now covers almost all 30 miles of the River Bollin, from its source above Macclesfield to where it flows into the Manchester Ship Canal at Warburton.
The project manages over 100 miles of footpaths, a section of the Trans Pennine Trail in Trafford, six picnic sites, a country park in Macclesfield, the Aviation Viewing Park at Manchester airport, a 200 acre farm and 140 Longhorn cattle.
Action Bollin prides itself on devising innovative ways to take its message out and about. It runs events that help people enjoy and be involved with the extensive network of paths and open spaces.
Many of these activities are organised in conjunction with our education group. The group has members from British Waterways, Cheshire Wildlife Trust, Designs on Art, the National Trust, the Environment Agency, Macclesfield Borough Council, Macclesfield Canal Society, Peak Park Rangers, Macclesfield RSPB Group and Wilmslow Wells for Africa.
The partnership has recently revised the Bollin Valley Way map to show the changes around runway two of Manchester airport and links to places of interest and cycle routes in the valley. It also hosted the tenth annual countryside taster day for people with disabilities and took part in Bikes, Boots and Buses into the Bollin, a project to encourage people from nearby Wythenshawe into the Bollin valley.
