Allotments were first introduced around 150 years ago to help the urban poor provide food for their families. Now allotments are more popular than ever with an estimated 300,000 plots in use around the country. David Ward goes out and about to allotments around Manchester to talk to green-fingered enthusiasts about what makes having your on bit of land so rewarding and learns about some innovative community schemes aiming to help people to get involved in growing their own food.
